  • Write an essay which will help the AUBG Admissions Committee become acquainted with you, understand your motivation for attending AUBG, and determine how well you can express yourself.

    Your essay should be around 650 words. It will be evaluated for its clarity, creativity, completeness of response, sentence structure, paragraphing, spelling, grammar, and style.

    The essay should be on one of the following topics:

    • What makes you an outstanding candidate for AUBG?
    • “The Career That Doesn’t Exist Yet”—imagining yourself in a future role no one’s heard of today.
    • The Role of Young People in Social Change — How Today’s Students Can Shape Tomorrow.
  • Submit one letter of recommendation from a teacher, professor, college counselor, or academic advisor familiar with your academic performance.

  • Submit an official transcript from the last three years of high school.

    If you have already completed high school, submit an official copy of your high school diploma with the final grades. Transcripts may be submitted in English, Bulgarian, or Russian. Translations must be completed by a certified translator and verified by a notary.

    The recommended minimum GPA for applicants is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (4.5 out of six 6 on the Bulgarian scale).

    Your transcript should include:

    • a list of all courses taken
    • grades earned
    • a calculated annual grade point average (GPA)
  • Submit your official English proficiency test scores. AUBG does not accept personal score reports or photocopies.

    Proof of English proficiency may be waived if you are a citizen of the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada and were primarily educated in those countries, or if you completed at least three years of full-time study at an English language accredited high school. Request a waiver from your Admissions Counselor.

    You can register for the Free Institutional English Proficiency Test offered annually.

    The interview may be in-person or scheduled online. Your Admissions Counselor will invite you to the interview once you’ve uploaded your high school transcript and English proficiency test score.

  • AUBG does not require SAT or ACT results for bachelor’s degrees admissions or financial aid purposes. However, scores may help you waive two AUBG introductory courses, MAT 100 and ENG 100.

    Transfer credit for work completed at other universities will be limited to:

    • courses completed with a grade of C+ or higher
    • academic coursework similar to what AUBG offers
    • a maximum of 60 credit hours from accredited institutions or institutions recognized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education
  • For each course you wish to transfer to AUBG, you must submit a class syllabus. Complete the Transfer Evaluation Request Form.

    Each syllabus must include at minimum the university name, professor details, reading materials, course assessments and assignments, and course outcomes.

  • In one or two pages, describe what you have done since you were last enrolled at AUBG and why you believe this is an appropriate time for you to return. If you left AUBG because you were academically suspended, please include information about the steps you have taken to ensure your improved academic performance. You may attach supporting documents to strengthen your case.

  • At the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), we have the following admission deadlines for bachelor’s degree applications:

    - Priority Admission: January 15

    - Early Admission: March 15

    - Regular Admission: May 15

    The sooner you apply, especially by the Priority Admission deadline of January 15, the higher your chances of acceptance at AUBG. Applying early gives you the best opportunity to secure your place and stand out in the admissions process.

  • The documents required for a bachelor’s degree admission as a first-year student to AUBG are:

    - Completed online application form

    - High school diploma (for those who have graduated) or official transcript for the previous three years of high school (for students in their final year)

    - English proficiency test scores (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo)

    - Essay on one of three topics

    - One letter of recommendation

    - CV or Portfolio

    - SAT or ACT scores (optional)

    If you are applying for a transfer, visit, part-time enrollment, or readmission, please familiarize yourself with the specific required documents, as they may differ.

  • The application process for undergraduate degrees at AUBG is straightforward:

    1. Complete the Application Form: Start by filling out the online application form or submit it through the common app.

    2. Submit documents: Provide the required documents, as outlined above.

    3. Interview: All applicants will be invited for an interview as part of the selection process. The interview can be either in-person or scheduled online.

    4. Review process: The Admissions Committee will evaluate your application and academic background.

    5. Receive decision: You will receive your admission decision within four to six weeks after the deadline you've chosen to meet (Priority, Early, Regular). Accepted students can then move forward with enrollment steps.

    Apply by the Priority Admission deadline (January 15) for the best chance of acceptance.

  • To report your English Proficiency Test score to AUBG, you should submit an official score report following the language certificantion center’s instructions:

    - For TOEFL: Log in to ETS and send your results using institutional code 2451.

    - For IELTS: Upload your Test Results Form (TRF) to your online application.

    - For Duolingo: Log in to your account, click "Send Results," and select AUBG (choose "Undergraduate" program).

    - For Cambridge (CAE): Upload your results to your online application or email your CAE reference number and date of birth to your admissions counselor.

  • There is no application fee for bachelor’s degree applications to the American University in Bulgaria.

  • It takes four to six weeks to receive an admissions decision from AUBG after the application deadline you have chosen to submitted your bachelor’s degree application by.

  • Classes at AUBG are taught entirely in English so a great command of the language is essential for academic success. AUBG offers the English for Academic Purposes program at its English Language Institute to help applicants improve their skills and improve their bachelor’s degree application.

  • To transfer to AUBG from another university, you’ll need to complete the standard AUBG application. You should also submit an official transcript issued from the university or college you are or were enrolled in, as well as a class syllabus for each course you wish to transfer to AUBG. We will review your academic record to determine transferable credits.

  • Great! This means we saw your potential and we are eager to welcome you to the AUBG community! Confirm your offer and pay the indicated deposit by the deadline stated in your acceptance letter. Once you've confirmed, we will guide you through the process of finding your place in the Residence Halls, selectingyour courses, and getting your Bulgarian student visa (for international students). A series of pre-orientation webinars will introduce you to different processes at AUBG, while an entire week of orientation before classes begin will help you get accustomed to life on campus and allow you to meet your new classmates.

Admissions Decisions

The American University in Bulgaria continually strives to notify prospective students of admissions decisions. Once the Admissions Office has received all the required documents, the Admissions Committee will consider the student's application. The student will be officially notified of the Committee's decision via email.
