English Language Institute

The English Language Institute (ELI) at AUBG

The English Language Institute at AUBG provides quality English-language instruction to prospective students and to all others interested in learning English as a foreign language. Established in 1992 as an auxiliary unit to the University, the ELI offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and General English courses, TOEFL, and IELTS preparation, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and a variety of community-oriented, tailor-made language instruction services.

Our Programs

Our intensive academic English for Academic Purposes (EAP) helps students improve their English substantially within a short period of time. It is taught in Fall and in Spring, 4-6 hours a day, Monday through Friday. For more information, please visit: www.aubg.edu/english-for-academic-purposes

Our Community Program (CP) offers General English courses at all levels for children (8-13) and adults (14+) as well as English proficiency test preparation courses like iBT TOEFL and IELTS. These courses are taught non-intensively in the Fall and Spring semester (twice a week, 3-4 hours), and intensively in the summer (4 weeks, Monday through Friday 4-5 hours a day), within the framework of the ELI Summer School. For more information, please visit: www.aubg.edu/community-program-yonger-learners and www.aubg.edu/summer-school

In addition to the EAP and the CP The ELI offers English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses as well as tailor-made courses to serve the language needs of corporate clients or other groups of people interested in mastering their English.

Our Classes

The learner-centered environment at the American University in Bulgaria encourages participation, initiative, creativity, and responsibility. The ELI classes are small (12-15 students per instructor) and interactive, applying a variety of modern and effective methods of English Language Teaching and using the latest state-of-the-art educational technology.

Our Instructors

All Bulgarian ELI instructors are university graduates with an MA degree in English and American Studies with substantial teaching experience. The higher level courses are taught by a team of instructors - non-native English speakers emphasize on grammar and reading comprehension skills, and native English speakers teach listening comprehension skills and conversation.

Eligibility of Applicants

The ELI has an open-enrollment policy; anyone wishing to study English, whether for personal, vocational, or academic reason, may enroll in any course offered by the Institute as long as they meet level-specific English-language proficiency prerequisites.

Admission to ELI courses is on first paid, first admitted basis.

English for Academic Purposes Program:

AUBG Prospective Students have to submit a full application package to the AUBG Admissions Office at: www.aubg.edu/eap-application-procedure. Upon admission to the ELI, the EAP students become conditionally-accepted AUBG students and improve their English proficiency at the ELI. Upon EAP completion are given the opportunity to take an English-proficiency admissions test and, if successful, become fully-admitted AUBG students.

Learners of English with no specific intentions to apply to AUBG, may send an email to: eli@aubg.edu.

Applicants can enter the EAP at any of the 3 modules (Steps) with an ELI English placement test or with the score of any English proficiency admissions test. EAP applicants need to have graduated from high school by the beginning of the program.

Community English Language Program: There are no prerequisites and no age limit for the non-intensive courses and the summer intensive courses.

The ELI classes are taught in the Main Building of the American University in Bulgaria.

EAP students enjoy full access to all services available to regular AUBG students, such as library, computer labs, canteen and cafeteria.  Accommodation at the Residence Halls is offered on a space-available basis.

During the summer months, all ELI students may enjoy the wonderful AUBG Residence Halls and dining facilities of the University at reasonable prices.
