English Language Institute

The English Language Institute is an auxiliary unit of AUBG established in 1992 and designed to offer English language education to prospective students of the University, people from the community, all over Bulgaria and the region of Eastern Europe.
The primary purpose of the Institute is to prepare future AUBG applicants for the TOEFL and SAT, as well as absolute beginners or students with intermediate level of English to master the language and apply to the University. Also, a variety of short-term courses are offered during the Fall, Spring and Summer semester - day-time and evening, intensive and non-intensive, from absolute beginner to advanced level - to part-time students taking English for professional, academic and other purposes.

During the Fall and Spring semesters the courses are offered either intensively, 4 to 6 hours a day, Monday through Friday, or as non-intensive twice-a-week evening school. The Summer semester is always intensive and courses are offered on a four-week four-hour-a-day scale.

The learner-centered environment at the American University in Bulgaria encourages participation, initiative, creativity and responsibility. The ELI classes are small (12 - 15 students per instructor) and interactive, applying a variety of modern and effective methods of English Language Teaching and using the latest state-of-the-art educational technology.

All Bulgarian ELI instructors are university graduates with an MA degree in English and American Studies with substantial teaching experience. The higher level courses are taught by a team of instructors - non-native English speakers emphasize on grammar and reading comprehension skills, and native English speakers teach listening comprehension skills and conversation.

AUBG's English Language Institute has an open enrollment policy; anyone wishing to study English, whether for personal, vocational or academic reason, may enroll in any Institute course as long as they meet class prerequisites. Admission to ELI courses is on first paid, first accepted basis.

The candidates for the full-time intensive courses, UPP, designed to prepare students to apply to the University, should present a high school diploma with GPA of minimum 5.00 (Bulgarian Grading System) or its equivalent if the candidate is a non-Bulgarian. Boys from ONLY regular intensive full-time one/two-semester courses can be deferred from their military service. There are no special prerequisites and no age limit for the non-intensive evening courses and the summer intensive courses.

The ELI Academic Program students enjoy full access to all services available to regular AUBG students, such as library, computer labs, canteen and cafeteria.  Accommodation is offered on a space-available basis.
During the summer months all ELI students may enjoy the wonderful residence halls and dining facilities of the University at reasonable prices.
