American University in Bulgaria Discontinues the English Language Institute
The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) announces that the English Language Institute will discontinue offering English language courses. Until early July, the Institute will continue its operations in order to conduct the planned summer school for all enrolled children.
The decision is part of a broader process of organizational development and strategic focus at the university. As the institution evolves and educational models continue to change, AUBG is directing its efforts and resources toward its core mission of educating engaged and responsible young people, while maintaining its established approach to the university’s long-term sustainability.
“The English Language Institute is one of the places through which generations of people from Blagoevgrad built their connection with AUBG. It was there that children took their first steps in learning English, and many adults gained the confidence to communicate in an international environment. This legacy deserves respect and gratitude,” said Dr. J.D. Mininger, Provost and Interim President of AUBG.
Throughout its more than 30-year history, the Institute has educated thousands of children and adults from Blagoevgrad and the region. For many families, it became more than just a language school — it became a natural part of the city’s life and one of the most recognizable connections between the local community and the university.
AUBG expresses its sincere gratitude to the faculty and staff of the English Language Institute, whose dedication and work over the years established it as one of the most respected and recognizable English language programs in Blagoevgrad and the region.
The university will provide the necessary support to employees during the transition period, including maintaining the right of their children to receive tuition waiver at AUBG.
Going forward, the university will continue to evaluate opportunities for different forms of engagement with the local community, in line with the needs of the region and AUBG’s mission.

Partnerships
The English Language Institute (ELI) at AUBG is an official partner of the British Council. As such, ELI is authorized to register candidates for the IELTS exam. With a minimum of 20 registered candidates, ELI can organize an IELTS exam right here in Blagoevgrad.
Starting in the summer of 2025, ELI will be partnering with Cambridge English and BRITANICA BG008 to offer our students the opportunity to take Cambridge English exams. This collaboration will provide our students with access to world-renowned language assessments that can enhance their academic prospects.

If you cancel your registration before the starting date of the course, you will receive an 80% fee refund. Once the course has started, you will not be refunded.
If extraordinary circumstances and/or events beyond the control of the English Language Institute at AUBG occur, the ELI reserves the right to make changes related to time and/or place of the offered services. If classes have to start/continue online due to orders issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria, course participants will receive instructions per e-mail about the method of inclusion and the platform by means of which classes will be taught.
The Еnglish Language Institute reserves the right to expel a student found in violation of the AUBG rules of conduct, incl. pandemic safety measures. The expelled student will not receive a fee refund. -
