ISEP Exchange Success: Georgi Nichev’s Story at Truman

Georgi Nichev’s journey to Truman State University through the ISEP exchange program was not exactly smooth. Unforeseen weather conditions in Colorado and a broken bus delayed his arrival, but he refused to let setbacks dampen his spirits. The obstacles actually led Georig to connect with other exchange students, charting the way to an unforgettable semester abroad.

Georgi, a Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) and Business Administration student, was genuinely motivated to study in the U.S.

“I wanted to study abroad away from Bulgaria to immerse myself even more fully in the experience. I had never been so far away from my family and friends before, so I wanted to challenge myself,” said Georgi. “The ISEP program offered the broadest selection of partner universities,” he added.

Finding support and paying it forward

Initially, Georgi found it difficult to adapt because friendship groups were already formed, and he had to make an effort to introduce himself.

“One thing I regret is not immersing myself from the start because I was still homesick for my friends and family at AUBG. My advice is to socialize from day one and overcome this fear of introducing yourself to new people.”

Fortunately, the open-mindedness of the diverse community at Truman State University made the transition easier.

“I felt very welcomed. People there are internationally focused and accustomed to adapting to new students. No matter what language you speak, you will be welcomed.”

“I also realized that you can have a great conversation with literally anyone. You don’t need to share the same interests or viewpoints.”

This realization was eye-opening for Georigi. At Truman, he engaged with people from diverse backgrounds whom he might not have approached at AUBG due to cultural differences. Wanting to pay it forward, he said:

“Because I was welcomed so warmly there, I want to provide the same experience for new and exchange students at AUBG.”

Another key factor that helped Georgi adapt was his integrational leader.

“This person acts as a mentor throughout the semester. Although it’s not mandatory, it’s highly recommended for new student to meet with their integrational leader two or three times a week. Mine was incredible.”

His advice to all students? “Open yourself up and step out of your comfort zone because you never know who you will become good friends with.”

Truman State University impressions

“When I first arrived at Truman, I was shocked because it was much bigger than AUBG. It had around 6,000 students, and each department had its own building.”

Georgi also appreciated the practical approach to education at Truman, where 50% of the classes were taught by industry professionals. He noted that every class felt like the start-up challenge at AUBG, following a similar structure. “I’m actively searching for more opportunities like this here at AUBG,” shared Georgi.

Beyond academics, he was impressed by the variety of extracurricular activities, including mandatory sports.

Georgi also took the opportunity to travel with friends and explore the region.

Applying to the U.S.: navigating the visa process

The application process was lengthy due to visa requirements, but Georgi received extensive support from the Erasmus and Study Abroad Programs Office. He also advises “reaching out to students who have already studied t your target university” to further guide you in the process.

Unlike the Erasmus+ program, where students apply to only two universities, the ISEP program allows participants to list ten institutions in order of preference. Since Truman State University follows the American curricular model, Georgi’s course credits transferred seamlessly.

Reflecting on his experience, Georgi concluded:

“The only thing stopping me from doing a second exchange is that my courses are becoming more specialized. Otherwise, I would absolutely go again – it’s been the best experience of my life so far.”
