AUBG Wins First Place and Six Medals at the 2026 National Mathematics Olympiad

For a second consequetive year, AUBG students showcased exceptional mathematics skills at the 2026 National Student Mathematics Olympiad (NSOM), winning first place as an institution and bringing home six individual medals.

The Olympiad took place in Samokov, Borovets, on May 16, and brought together more than 140 students from higher education institutions across Bulgaria. AUBG was represented by six students who competed in in the category for universities with a similar level of mathematics instruction to AUBG, with Dr. Ali Raad, Professor of Mathematics, as the team leader.

The team earned both first place in the team ranking and first place in the university ranking in their category. On an individual level, all six AUBG participants received medals: three gold, two silver, and one bronze, respectively:

  1. Abdullah Hassan: Gold Medal with a Perfect Score
  2. Georgi Nikolov: Gold Medal with a Perfect Score
  3. Preslav Petrov: Gold Medal
  4. Stanislav Paraskov: Silver Medal
  5. Iva Ichevska: Silver Medal
  6. Daviti Zhgenti: Bronze Medal
“This victory first and foremost highlights the strong mathematical abilities of our students, confirming that they are among the best in the country,” said Prof. Raad. “It also reflects the strength of the Mathematics and Science Department, and of AUBG as a whole, in developing high-achieving students through a strong commitment to excellence in liberal arts education. Achievements like this demonstrate that our students are well prepared to remain highly competitive both regionally and internationally after graduation.”
Founded in 1974, the National Student Mathematics Olympiad is considered the most prestigious mathematics competition for university students in Bulgaria. It welcomes students from bachelor’s and master’s programs across the country, with participants competing in one of three categories based on the number of mathematics teaching hours offered by their institutions.
This participation is funded by the Student Travel Fund at AUBG. The University is gladly funding the participation of outstanding students in academic and co-curricular opportunities that contribute to their academic, personal, and professional development.
