Board of Trustees Updates January 2024

This past weekend marked the annual January Board of Trustees meeting in New York. The meeting showcased a series of significant updates that underscore the institution’s dedication to academic excellence, strategic growth, and financial sustainability.

Development updates

The Board has appointed Susan Johnson as the Senior VP of Development, effective February 15th. Susan is a global executive strategist with over 20 years of experience in leading the design and implementation of strategies to identify funding sources and accelerate financial growth objectives. She has accumulated extensive higher education fundraising experience, having served as a VP of Development at the American University of Rome. Prior to joining AUBG, she was a senior consultant at the New York-based Whelan Group.

During the meeting, U.S. consultant Jim Langley presented detailed key findings in several critical development areas. By collaborating closely with the development team, he will play a key role in streamlining and refining our strategy. This strategy will focus on strategic fundraising, building relationships with key stakeholders, and identifying new opportunities for growth.

Admissions Success

A notable highlight was the success of the new priority admissions deadline. This approach attracted interest among prospective students and yielded more favorable results compared to the early admissions process in 2023. This success once again demonstrates AUBG’s commitment to expanding its impact in the region and beyond.

Skaptopara III Residence Hall Expansion

AUBG obtained a construction permit from the Municipality, paving the way for the addition of two new wings to the Skaptopara III Residence Hall. This update was shared during the recent meeting, highlighting our commitment to maintaining the residential character of our campus. The expansion is crucial for supporting our community’s living and learning environment. With plans firmly in place, construction is anticipated to begin following the spring semester, aligning with our strategic efforts to provide a supportive and integrated residential experience for our students. We will regularly update the campus community with construction developments as the project progresses.

America for Bulgaria Foundation long-lasting support

The America for Bulgaria Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to AUBG’s mission by donating $1 million matching grant to support high-quality education and the university’s sustainable future. ABF also donated $100,000 to AUBG’s Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship (CIDC). The CIDC supports the development of democratic principles and the promotion of informed citizenship.

Staff Council

The Board has approved the establishment of a Staff Council at AUBG. This council will provide a formal platform for staff members to voice their opinions, concerns, and suggestions, ensuring that their perspectives are heard and considered in decision-making processes. Such an inclusive approach promotes a more democratic and transparent work environment, fostering a sense of belonging and respect among the staff.

BoT updates

The BoT welcomed Mr. Chris Potts as a new member. Chris Potts is a visionary CEO and Chair with over 20 years of international board-level experience. With a diverse academic background and community involvement, he is a respected figure in the technology and business world.
