Nikolina Radeva, Director of the English Language Institute (ELI) at AUBG, shares what’s to come in the realm of language education, offering practical insights from her extensive experience.
Managing an English language center means remaining at the forefront of innovation, as new English language teaching methods continuously emerge. Our mission at the English Language Institute (ELI) at the American University in Bulgaria is to provide high-quality English language education to learners from diverse backgrounds. For the past 30 years, we have secured our reputation, emphasizing ELI’s impact as a regional and global leader in language education, all thanks to our approach to innovation.
Embracing AI and technology in English language education
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the educational landscape and rather than resisting this change, we embrace it. Our instructors integrate AI into lesson planning, personalizing instruction to cater to students’ unique learning styles and needs. Our resources complement the multisensory approach by incorporating auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements, fostering an immersive learning environment.
Gamification and independent learning
One of our core beliefs is that learning extends beyond the classroom, and technology helps us create interactive and engaging learning experiences that students can tap into anytime, anywhere. For example, we encourage our students to become independent learners by integrating mobile phones and social media into our language instruction. ELI instructors use appropriate social media posts and YouTube videos to engage students in classroom discussions, promote critical thinking, and document their experiences at ELI. Additionally, instructors actively participate in creating short social media reels, providing students with English learning tips.
Gamification has also been a key method in our pedagogy, transforming language learning into an enjoyable and rewarding process. ELI instructors incorporate gamification into the classroom by using interactive apps such as Kahoot, Quizizz, Blooket, Hangman, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, to name a few, making learning more engaging and dynamic.
Fostering inclusivity
Inclusivity is another pillar of ELI’s philosophy. At ELI, inclusivity means welcoming and supporting all learners, including neurodivergent individuals, those with speech and social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties (SEBD), people with physical differences or long-term sensory impairments, and individuals with functional limitations. We ensure that everyone has equal access to language learning, provided they adhere to our policies and procedures. All students have the same opportunities to engage with the physical environment, information, communication, learning resources, and academic experiences at ELI.
Additionally, we ensure our curriculum reflects diverse perspectives and experiences, making all students feel represented and valued. English is the language of the global citizen, and our programs strive to foster intercultural understanding, communication, and collaboration. Given the rich diversity of our student body, our instructors go beyond traditional language instruction to cultivate interpersonal skills, effective communication, and an appreciation for cultural differences.
Project-based learning for deeper engagement
Project-based learning is a method of teaching English language that is key to our approach. Some examples of student projects include ‘Animals Around the World,’ cultural presentations, ‘Food Around the World,’ Martenitsa weaving, waste management initiatives, ‘Plant a Tree for a Day‘ (a hands-on environmental project), and developing and presenting real-life business projects.
By focusing on real-world tasks and collaborative activities, we foster deeper engagement with the language and strengthen social bonds among students. Through this approach, learners develop essential soft skills, including emotional intelligence, teamwork, and adaptability—qualities that are indispensable in today’s interconnected world.
Encouraging soft skills
We place a strong emphasis on critical thinking – an essential soft skill in today’s environment. From an early age, our students are encouraged to tackle real-world problems, analyze scenarios, and propose solutions that integrate knowledge from various disciplines. This approach helps them differentiate between merely knowing a language and actively using it in practical contexts.
Life-long learning through specialized programs
Our commitment to language education extends to specialized programs. For instance, our summer schools attract students from outside the local region, offering immersive language experiences that prepare them for real-world applications.
This summer, we are introducing Cambridge Young Learners English (YLE) preparation courses, fostering early familiarity and motivation for standardized English language assessments. For professionals, our Business English courses are designed to meet the specific needs of working individuals seeking to enhance their communication skills in corporate environments.
Additionally, our partnership with Ottobock in Blagoevgrad allows us to provide tailored German language courses for employees, demonstrating our ability to design customized programs for organizations seeking to invest in their workforce.
We believe that innovation in education involves not only adopting new technologies but also designing specialized programs that cater to various age groups, industries, and real-world applications.
