Griffins Bowl 2024 Brings Back American Flag Football on Campus

Is there an American University without American Football? Maybe. But AUBG is definitely not part of this list. The Blagoevgrad Griffins have been holding strong for 17 years, making sure that the AUBG community is well-represented on the field. The team is not only training but it is also looking for all sorts of creative ways to raise awareness about the sport, like promoting community events, charity initiatives, and organizing global reality show competitions on campus.

This year, the club added to the list the revived Griffin Bowl American Flag Football Tournament.

The event kicked off with opening remarks by AUBG President Dr. Margie Ensign who expressed her support for the club’s initiative to spread awareness about this typical American sport and Dean Wien’s excitement to welcome the football community on campus.

“It was a great pleasure for me to be President of Griffins this year,” said Andrea Malinova. “I am so thankful for every single member of the club that dedicated their time and efforts to make all of our events this year possible and amazing.”

“I may say that this year was the most successful one for Griffins as we managed to organize events that aim to both contribute to our community and popularize American football as a sport.”

As one of the oldest American football clubs in Bulgaria, the Griffins were thrilled to bring teams together for a day of friendly competition, fostering a love for the sport in Blagoevgrad and beyond.

The competition featured two official women’s teams: the Sofia Witches and the Blagoevgrad Griffins women’s team. Men’s teams included the Knights, Bulldozers, and Cavaliers, alongside teams formed by the Griffin hosts – current students and alumni.

At the end of the day, Sofia Bulldozers were awarded with the first place, while the Cavaliers brought home the second place.

The event was made possible also thanks to the partners: Coca-Cola HBC, Hell Energy Bulgaria, Celebrations – Snickers, Twix, M&Ms, Aladin Foods, Savini Gelato, FST Protein Bars, Avo Bakery, Zayo Bayo, Medenki Lubimka, Pastis, Coffee Spot, Queens.
