Buy or Short? AUBGers Tackle Real-World Finance in Second Investment Challenge

The second edition of the Investment Challenge: Buy or Short, organized by the AUBG Investment Management Club, brought together AUBGers and financial experts for a dynamic weekend of investment strategies.

The competition that took place in the beginning of April welcomed seven student teams to assess and pitch investment strategies for publicly traded companies from the S&P 500 index, all within a strict 48-hour deadline.

During the weekend challenge, participants demonstrated their analytical depth, evaluating factors such as macroeconomic trends, business models, historical performance, industry positioning, and financial statements. The teams were free to choose their company of interest, but at the end of the day, they had to make recommendations whether to buy or short the stock, backed by data and insights.

The event’s culmination were 20-minute presentations from each team in front of the jury, AUBG Professor Julian Darby and Ivaylo Vatev, CFO at AG Capital. Students defended their investment decisions in a professional setting that echoed the intensity of real-world financial presentations.

“I am happy for what my team and I have achieved,” said the president of the club, Ivaylo Kotsev. “This year’s challenge was a huge step for IMC as we managed to double almost every aspect of The Investment Challenge, in comparison to what we did the previous year. A finance-oriented challenge on campus is something very helpful for the AUBG students, and we are proud to provide that opportunity. We can’t wait for next year’s Investment Challenge, hopefully expanding it even more.”

This year’s company picks reflected the complexities of the stock market environment. Teams presented cases for and against investments in major players like Adobe, PayPal, and several promising energy sector stocks, highlighting the students’ agility in navigating shifting economic conditions.
Mentorship played a key role in the event’s success. Participants had the opportunity to consult with experts in finance and real estate from some of Bulgaria’s leading firms, gaining firsthand insight into investment strategy development.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of IMC’s sponsors: TravelMania, Organic EOOD, IDD Agency, SuperHosting, InkoFoods, Coca-Cola, Southwest Burger Blagoevgrad, Hotel Sante, Haineken, Imperial Palace Hotel Sunny Beach, Quicky Burger, Zayo Bayo, Kapital, bTV Radio Group, and MediaPool.

As the Investment Management Challenge continues to grow, it reaffirms AUBG’s commitment to experiential learning and preparing students for the fast-paced world of finance.
