In October, the month dedicated to fighting breast cancer, students from the American University in Bulgaria showed for another year that good is stronger when done together. Under the motto “One Cause. Many Steps. Stronger Together,” the Better Community Club united its members, partners and other like-minded people in a series of charitable and educational initiatives dedicated to awareness, prevention and support for women fighting this disease.

All these efforts contributed to the total amount raised from the three initiatives, which amounts to 7,233 BGN, which will be donated to the non-governmental organization “For Her” – in support of women undergoing treatment and recovery from breast cancer.

Educate

On October 10, an interactive lecture was held in the AUBG Auditorium with Dr. Vanya Mitova, surgeon and mammologist. Dr. Mitova presented modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, risk factors and ways to detect the disease early to students, staff and faculty. Guests had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the importance of prevention and taking care of their own health.

Run

On October 12, Bachinovo Park hosted the traditional charity marathon. Among the dozens of enthusiasts, the youngest participant stood out – only six years old, a symbol of the fact that empathy has no age.

In addition to running, citizens and guests of Blagoevgrad also participated in the charity bazaar with handmade products and homemade treats, organized activities for children and information activities, through which they had the opportunity to learn more about the cause of the month – the fight against breast cancer.

Support

The final event took place on October 15 on the AUBG campus, the traditional charity bazaar. Visitors enjoyed homemade food, thematic souvenirs and sports games prepared by  Olympics.

Thanks to the partnership with Blagoevgrad Hospital, participants also had the opportunity to benefit from free preventive examinations performed by three specialists on site.

The organizers extend their heartfelt gratitude to their partners and supporters – The Blagoevgrad Hospital, AUBG Health and Well-Being Center, Blagoevgrad Municipality and Southwestern University “Neofit Rilski”, Olympics, CERT and ARTISTOCRACY, as well as to all the volunteers, participants and donors who helped turn the cause into a true celebration of solidarity.

With a series of good deeds, smiles and causes, the students of the American University in Bulgaria once again proved that together we can do more.
