As Campus Sustainability Month is upon us, we look at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and implement green campus ideas. Sustainability is a community effort, and there are many small changes we can make to create a lasting positive impact at AUBG.
Here are our favorite strategies for fostering sustainability on campus.
1. Swap plastic bags for reusable totes
One of the simplest ways to embrace green campus ideas is by ditching single-use plastic bags. It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill, and even then, it doesn’t break down completely but instead becomes microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.
Instead, opt for a reusable tote, especially one made from natural fabric like cotton. Tote bags can be customized, or you can buy a branded one to show your support for a cause or organization. They’re incredibly durable, helping you cut down on plastic use in the long run. Carry your books, groceries, and other essentials, and walk around campus proudly, knowing you’re doing your part for the environment.
2. Choose a refillable water bottle
Stay hydrated the sustainable way by bringing a reusable water bottle to campus. Disposable plastic bottles contribute massively to environmental pollution and your health, as they contain chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors. At AUBG, we’ve installed filtered water refill stations throughout campus, making it easier to refill on the go. This small change not only reduces plastic waste but also helps you save money over time.
3. Pack your meals in a reusable lunch box
Whether you’re bringing home-cooked food to campus or taking home a satiating meal from our canteen, consider switching to a reusable lunch box. Choose one made from eco-friendly materials such as stainless steel or BPA-free plastic. Single-use plastic containers often end up in landfills, but a sturdy, reusable box can last for years, helping to reduce waste while keeping your meals fresh.
4. Sip sustainably with a reusable coffee mug
If you’re a coffee lover, you likely visit our Griffins Café frequently. Instead of using disposable paper or plastic cups, carry a refillable coffee mug. Our staff will be happy to fill it with your favorite drink, eliminating the need for single-use cups. Plus, you’ll enjoy your beverage from your personal mug or thermos.
5. Recycle plastic responsibly
Recycling on campus is one of the most effective ways to reduce waste. We’ve placed recycling bins throughout campus to help you dispose of plastic responsibly. Encourage your friends to recycle too—every little bit helps in creating a more sustainable campus environment.
6. Save energy by turning off lights
One of the easiest campus sustainability ideas is to turn off the lights when you leave a room. Many of us are guilty of leaving lights on without thinking, but conserving energy is key to a sustainable campus. Get in the habit of switching off lights when you leave your dorm, study room, or lecture hall.
7. Keep windows closed to conserve heating
During colder months, the heating around campus and in Skapto I and II is always on, but leaving windows open wastes that energy. Be mindful to close your windows when you’re not in your room or heading out for the day, especially during the winter vacation. This small act can make a big difference in reducing energy consumption.
8. Opt for locally sourced food
Bulgaria is home to some of the most nourishing and delicious produce, particularly in the Blagoevgrad region. Just a 10-minute walk from campus, you’ll find a market offering fresh fruits and vegetables, while the farmer’s market is a treasure trove for traditional Bulgarian cheese and other animal products. By purchasing locally sourced food, you’re not only supporting your community but also reducing your carbon footprint and promoting sustainable farming practices.
9. Explore books on sustainability
Knowledge is power, and educating yourself about environmental issues is a great step towards making a real impact. Whether you’re pursuing a Sustainability Studies minor or simply interested in green campus ideas, reading about sustainability will give you new insights and help you make better choices. Visit Panitza Library to discover some of the best reads on the topic.
10. Get involved with the Sustainability Club
One of the best ways to make campus more sustainable is by joining the Sustainability Club. There, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in events, run awareness campaigns, and lead green initiatives on campus. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for creating a greener world.
Being sustainable starts with small changes. Use October as a month to adopt some green habits and encourage your peers to join in – it can turn into a fun campus challenge with a positive impact!
