Fun Fact #4: The Cyrillic alphabet became the EU’s third official alphabet when Bulgaria joined 

Bulgaria was the first country in the European Union to use the Cyrillic alphabet, which became the EU’s third official alphabet upon the country’s accession in 2007, following the Latin and Greek alphabets. Introduced in Bulgaria in the 9th century, the Cyrillic alphabet is now used by over 300 million people, primarily in Eastern Europe and Asia.

What’s considered to be the world’s oldest gold treasure was discovered in Varna, a city on the coast often referred to by Bulgarians as the “sea capital.” Found in 1972, the Varna Gold Treasure dates back to the fifth century B.C. and consists of approximately 3,000 items made of 24-carat gold, weighing over 6.5 kilograms.

Plovdiv, Europe’s oldest city, has over 8,000 years of history and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Fun Fact #8: The yoghurt bacterium is named after Bulgaria 

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, formerly known as Lactobacillus bulgaricus, is a beneficial bacterium primarily used in yogurt production. It was first identified by Bulgarian doctor Stamen Grigorov, who named it Bacillus bulgaricus. Bulgarians take pride in their yogurt, which is famous worldwide, and most enjoy it daily.

Bulgaria is a paradise for spa tourism, with over 700 natural mineral springs and 142 spa resorts. The country ranks second in Europe for the highest number of natural springs, following Iceland. The town of Sandanski, renowned for its mineral water and numerous spa options, is less than an hour’s drive from AUBG and Blagoevgrad, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation.
