On October 18, we marked the completion of Elvin Guri (‘96)’s 18 years of distinguished service on the AUBG Board of Trustees, who will now transition into the University Council. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Elvin was presented with the AUBG Distinguished Service Award during the Board of Trustees dinner at Orbita Hotel & Spa.
Several distinguished guests gathered to honor Elvin Guri, including members of the Board of Trustees, University Council, AUBG leadership, faculty, and students, as well as special guests such as Nancy Schiller, President and CEO of America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF), and Blagoevgrad Mayor Metodi Baykushev. Elvin’s wife, Ralitsa Agayn-Guri, and two of their three children were by his side, reflecting the deep family support that has always been part of his commitment to AUBG.
Victoria Entwistle, AUBG Board Acting Chair of the AUBG Board of Trustees and former AUBG student, presented the award to Elvin with heartfelt gratitude and admiration, saying:
“Elvin is many firsts on this Board: the first independently elected alumnus, the most generous alumnus in the history of AUBG, and the first Trustee to reach maximum length of service under our bylaws.
“Tonight, I am honored to offer you, on Behalf of the AUBG Trustees, the last remaining award, Elvin. This is the Distinguished Service Award, recognizing outstanding achievements exemplifying AUBG’s mission, goals, and ideals.”
Elvin accepted the award with heartfelt gratitude and an endearing speech, which he concluded with the following:
“As far as I’m concerned, the Board has only one straightforward, albeit not simple, task: to ensure that AUBG is around 100 years from now. Ultimately, it’s all that matters, no matter the compromises that we have to do along the way.
“AUBG was born in a time of upheaval, it has lived through multiple crises, and it has survived. Sometimes, through some of the worst moments, I would take comfort from the words of my father: ‘things are never as good as they feel, and never as bad as they seem.’ Thanks to the commitment of generations of teachers, administration, students, and thanks to the support of a few great friends, it has not only endured, but it has prospered. From time to time it’s worth taking a victory lap for that, I promise you!”
In their remarks, Nancy Schiller spoke of her ten-year friendship with Elvin, calling him someone she deeply respects and often turns to for advice, while Provost and Interim President Dr. J.D. Mininger described him as “a role model of integrity and commitment.”
A journey of service and impact
Elvin began his journey at AUBG as a student in 1996, majoring in Business Administration and History & Civilizations. During his time at AUBG, Elvin developed a deep appreciation for the university’s mission and the transformative power of a liberal arts education.
“You leave AUBG but it never leaves you,” shared Elvin in an interview several years ago. “It is almost unavoidable that whenever I got the opportunity, and the chance and the means, I would do something for the university.”
And he did. Almost two decades ago, Elvin joined the Board of Trustees, bringing gratitude, commitment, and unmatched dedication to his alma mater. Over the years, he has served as Chair of the Audit and Finance & Property Committees, guiding AUBG with integrity, vision, and care.
A long-standing tradition of giving back
Beyond his governance role, Elvin is AUBG’s most generous alumnus, having donated approximately $650,000 and secured an additional $850,000 in support, a total of $1.5 million. As a successful investor, entrepreneur, and CEO of Invenio Partners, he has funded numerous partial scholarships for new and continuing Albanian and Bulgarian students, as well as students of Albanian descent, expanding access to education for hundreds of young people.
His impact has been recognized through numerous honors, including the inaugural Her Royal Highness Princess Maria Luisa Distinguished Alumni Award for Civic Leadership and Change and the Dimi and Yvonne Panitza Visionary Award – both testaments to his enduring legacy.
A community builder and mentor
Beyond his governing and scholarship contributions, Elvin has strengthened the AUBG community in countless ways. He is the founding president of the AUBG Alumni Association, a testament to his belief in the uniting and long-lasting power of the AUBG community.
Elvin has also taught at the university on both undergraduate and graduate levels, sharing his experience and insights with students while mentoring the next generation of leaders. His engagement demonstrates that giving back is not only about financial support but also about sharing knowledge, time, and encouragement.
Though his formal Board service has concluded, Elvin remains an engaged and passionate supporter of AUBG: a mentor, advocate, and friend to AUBG. His generosity, leadership, and commitment to ethical and democratic values will continue to inspire generations of students and alumni alike.
