What began as a master’s thesis project for AUBG alumnus Dimitar Ouzounov (’09) has grown into a leading Norwegian software company – Documaster, that recently announced an important milestone. Documaster, a cloud-native provider of document management and e-archiving solutions, was acquired by the international software investor Main Capital Partners.
Founded in 2014, Documaster serves over 750 public and private sector clients across Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The company helps organizations streamline and secure their data archiving while ensuring compliance with growing regulatory demands.
Behind this Nordic success story lies a strong Bulgarian connection and a glimpse of the AUBG community.
A Journey That Started with Curiosity
Dimitar’s journey as a co-founder began with a master’s program in software engineering in Dublin. For his thesis, he built a prototype records management system compliant with the Norwegian national standard Noark 5. That idea eventually turned into a pilot project and, soon after, a company in 2014, when Documaster was officially launched.
When the time to scale the product came, Dimitar made a bold proposal to build an in-house engineering team in Bulgaria, rather than outsource development. Thanks to the trust of the rest of the management team, he returned home and, together with Ina Kamenova (‘09) as HR manager, opened Documaster’s Bulgarian office with its first employees.
“From the very beginning, we set out to build a people-first company, and that’s exactly what we created,” Ina said. “A place where people mattered and where I felt I truly belonged.”
AUBG Community at the Core
The Bulgarian branch became the heart of Documaster’s technical activities and a hub influenced to a large extent by the AUBG spirit. Several key team members, both past and present, are AUBG alumni, and the values they brought from the university campus helped shape the company culture.
Over the past decade, the Bulgarian team has played a crucial role in product development, infrastructure, data migration, and overall customer success. Their work has been instrumental in driving Documaster’s steady growth and establishing a strong market reputation.
“The no-blame culture and the small, close-knit team encouraged and simplified the process of experimenting, building, and learning,” said the CTO of Documaster, Ivaylo Mitrev (’14).
“We felt true ownership and satisfaction with the technical and product decisions we made and acted on together.”
A New Chapter: Main Capital Partners
In May 2025, Documaster announced its acquisition by Main Capital Partners, a strategic investor with extensive experience in scaling SaaS companies across Europe. With this partnership, Documaster aims to expand further across the continent, continue innovating, and strengthen its presence in both the public and regulated private sectors.
While Dimitar has recently stepped away from the company to focus on new endeavors, he remains proud of what the team has built and the role AUBG played in it:
“Working with so many fantastic people at Documaster, including quite a few AUBGers, has been a privilege. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and I’m curious to see where the company goes next.”
