Dean Starkman Encourages Local Journalists and Emphasizes Their Role in Safeguarding Democracy

On October 17, 2024, Dean Starkman, a distinguished journalist, author, and media critic known for his work in investigative journalism and media ethics, visited the AUBG to meet with participants in the “English for Journalists” program, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria. The program is aimed at enhancing the language and professional skills of Bulgarian journalists through courses and specialized training.

During the event, Dean Starkman highlighted the crucial role of local journalists as guardians of democracy and freedom of speech. In his speech, he shared insights from his extensive career advocating for ethical journalism and transparency. Starkman congratulated the journalists for their dedication and their commitment to improving their skills, commending them for investing time to enhance their language proficiency at the English Language Institute (ELI) at AUBG and for participating in additional workshops that support their career growth and the development of Bulgaria’s media landscape.

The event was attended by other distinguished guests, including Jacob Udo-Udo Jacob, Executive Director of the Center for Information, Democracy and Citizenship (CIDC) at AUBG, as well as representatives from the America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF) —Petya Dyulgerova, Program Manager, and Radostina Mihalkova-Tosheva, Program Director.

This initiative underscores the importance of collaboration between local and international institutions united in the mission to support independent journalism and strengthen democratic values.
