AUBG Board of Trustees Update May 2025

The past weekend marked the annual May meeting of the Board of Trustees before the 31st Commencement Ceremony.

“It was a true honor to take part in this year’s beautiful Commencement ceremony and to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the Class of 2025,” said BoT Chair Chris Potts. “From the warm and joyful Parents’ Reception to the sunlit graduation ceremony and the many inspiring conversations with faculty, students, and staff, these moments reminded us of the strength and heart of the AUBG community. Thank you to everyone who helped make these celebrations so special.”

In parallel, the Board of Trustees held its regular May meeting. Read below key highlights and outcomes.

Strategy discussion

The Board held an in-depth discussion on AUBG’s five-year strategic plan and reviewed progress toward our institutional goals. As part of this conversation, it reaffirmed AUBG’s deep commitment to expanding the international student body and enhancing its global footprint, while creating a more vibrant and international academic environment.

Admissions

Thanks to the dedication of the Admissions team, strategic recruitment campaigns, and compelling content developed by the OCM, AUBG has once again attracted a record number of qualified applicants for the incoming class. At a time when many universities are facing steep declines in enrollment, this reflects the strength of AUBG’s academic programs and the targeted recruitment strategies.  There is an increase in inquiries and applications from both domestic and international students compared to the same period last year.

Development & Alumni Relations

The Development Office has successfully exceeded its fundraising goal for Fiscal Year 2025, with the completed ABF matching grant marking a key milestone in the first half of the academic year. Looking ahead, the university will continue to deepen engagement with the global alumni network and expand its relationships with major foundations and philanthropic partners to further raise AUBG’s profile, impact, and visibility.

Academics

The NECHE accreditation process remains on track, with all planned steps progressing smoothly and in alignment with expectations. The Fall 2024 Sofia Semester concluded successfully, reaffirming AUBG’s commitment to experiential learning and professional development through internship and study opportunities in the capital. Planning for the Fall 2025 semester is already underway and will include key improvements and new partnerships. As part of the academic expansion, AUBG continues to grow its faculty with experts from around the globe who contribute to the academic excellence of AUBG.

Financial

AUBG remains in a strong financial position. The Board approved the proposed budget for the 2025–2026 academic year, supporting the university’s strategic priorities and long-term sustainability.

Governance

During the Commencement ceremony, the Board had the privilege of honoring Mr. Michael D. Marvin with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, recognizing his visionary leadership and strong commitment to AUBG. As a longtime trustee and former Chair of the Board, Marvin has played an instrumental role in supporting the university’s mission and advancing its long-term impact. His dedication, generosity, and belief in the power of liberal arts education have left a lasting legacy. In addition to raising and contributing more than $1.1 million to support AUBG and its mission, he has donated $50,000 in honor of the Class of 2025 to further advance the university’s continued excellence.

“As we celebrate these achievements and continue to build on our momentum, let us remain united by the values and vision that define AUBG,” said President Ensign. “Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our community, our region, and the world.
