The weekend began with a highly engaging session at the Bulgarian Consulate, where Christo Grozev (‘95) shared insights on pressing global issues. Alumni, faculty, students, and Board members came together to reconnect, exchange ideas, and deepen their ties to AUBG. The event set the tone for a productive meeting filled with discussions on enhancing academic excellence, fostering global outreach, and supporting student success.

Governing with Excellence & Expanding Philanthropy
The Board engaged in a deep dive into university governance, led by Celeste Schenck, exploring American university governance at its best and AUBG’s alignment with NECHE accreditation standards. The conversation was followed by a session on philanthropy, presented by Jim Langley, emphasizing the importance of long-term donor engagement and strategic fundraising.
Expanding Academics
AUBG is excited to introduce a new BA in Film & Creative Media, expanding its academic offerings and providing students with new opportunities in the realms of digital media and creative industries. Sustainability also remains a key priority for the university, with ongoing initiatives that incorporate environmental responsibility into both the curriculum and research.
In recognition of AUBG’s academic leadership, the Board extended the contract of Provost Dr. J.D. Mininger, ensuring continuity in the university’s academic direction and commitment to excellence.
Admissions and Global Outreach
The Board celebrated the increase in inquiries and applications for the Fall 2025 term, with a marked rise in both domestic and international interest. This growth reflects the success of the university’s expanded recruitment efforts. The Board reaffirmed AUBG’s commitment to increasing the number of international students, ensuring a diverse and dynamic learning environment.
Fundraising and Development
AUBG’s “2 Million Chances to Change a Life” campaign has successfully surpassed its $1 million fundraising goal, with $1.24 million raised as of December 12. The Board’s active participation and generosity were crucial in achieving this milestone, with 100% of Board members, as well as senior staff and over 300 alumni, contributing. The funds will primarily support student scholarships over the next few years.
CIDC: Advancing Democracy & Regional Impact
The Board discussed the work of the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship , led by Dr. Jacob and Christo Grozev (‘95), which has become a regional leader in promoting democratic engagement, combating disinformation, and building institutional resilience. Given recent global political challenges, the Board is committed to expanding CIDC’s global reach and ensuring its impact is sustained through strategic partnerships and funding support.
The Board held an in-depth discussion on the work of the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship (CIDC), led by Dr. Jacob and Christo Grozev (‘95), highlighting its role as a regional leader in promoting democratic engagement, countering disinformation, and strengthening institutional resilience. With recent global political developments, the Board is fully supportive of expanding the global reach and impact of the CIDC and is closely monitoring funding allocations, as some government funds have been suspended, reinforcing the need for strategic partnerships and expanded support to sustain CIDC’s critical impact.
Board Leadership Update
The Board also welcomed Dr. Chris Potts as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees, succeeding Mr. Michael D. Marvin, who provided visionary leadership during his tenure.
