Panitza Library is delighted to invite you to the exhibition "The image of Don Quixote through the ages. Publications from the collection of the National Library", organized by the Embassy of Spain in Bulgaria in cooperation with the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. The purpose of the exhibition is to present to visitors a series of illustrations of the characters and their adventures in the novel "Don Quixote", through the interpretation and imagination of various artists who worked on the first editions of the book.
The exhibition was created on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of one of the greatest and most universal writers - the Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and presents his genius work "Don Quixote de la Mancha" through illustrations that reflect and influence its reading over the centuries.
It includes 28 engravings, illustrations from three early editions of the novel Don Quixote with the respective specificities of styles:
English edition: 6 engravings by the illustrator Francis Hayman (1708-1776);
Spanish edition: 16 engravings from the 1780 edition of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language;
French edition - 6 engravings by Gustave Doré (1832-1883).
The exhibition also includes 9 panels with information on the engravings and on various editions of Don Quixote, which include visions and data provided for the exhibition by the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library.
You also have the opportunity to see one of the oldest and most valuable books in Panitza Library: The second volume of the book “El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha” from 1798, part of the Library Special Collection, which contains especially preserved and vivid images picturing the life and time of the author.
Join us for the Opening ceremony on January 25, at 12:00 p.m., Panitza Library Ground Floor.
The exhibition will be displayed from January 25 to February 8, 2024.
