Proofs and Problem Solving | MAT 1010
The aim of this course is to equip the student with various techniques of mathematical proof as well as to apply these techniques to solve numerous problems across the spectrum of fundamental mathematics. Techniques for proofs constitute the core of any mathematical career and are necessary for the study of mathematics. Developing the necessary skills to solve problems is a prerequisite for successful employment both within and outside the scientific sector. The course aims to teach the student how to properly structure mathematical arguments by constructing logically coherent, clear, and concise solutions to problems of differing types. The large variety of problems and theory that will be considered will equip the student with a toolbox of results and techniques that lie at the core of mathematics and which become useful in further mathematical or scientific education.
