Managing Energy Transitions
SUS 3001
Achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 – a target set by scientists and adopted by many businesses and governments - will require a huge transformation in the way energy is managed. This class will examine the characteristics and the drivers of past and current energy transitions and the implications for technologies and businesses involved. Questions we will discuss in class relate to the business proposition of companies with regard to new energy technologies and their approaches to renewable energy implementation. Some of the management questions we will tackle relate to understanding the disruptive trends in the energy sector and the development of scenarios for a carbon free world. Via case studies, simulations, and guest speakers, this class will observe how value is created in the industry and how different dynamics play out in specific market and historical contexts.
