Introduction to Language and Culture Studies

This course starts from the premise that all language acts are culturally based. This course will stimulate curiosity about the study of human language and what human language reveals about the human cultures it reflects by introducing the fundamental concepts and principles of modern languages. The main topics of this course will focus on the definition of a language, language and cultural diversity, the structural and functional features of the language, and the relevance of cultural changes to the development of specific language features, such as lexical borrowing in languages in contact.
