In the course we will study both practices and theories of Ecomedia, which range from environmental journalism to eco-data/scientific interpretation to cultural representations of the environment and non-human world. Through readings, discussions, media viewings and field trips, students will come to understand the call for a Media Studies that places more emphasis on ecology, sustainability, and the environment. This media "ecological reboot" combines material and symbolic aspects of study with an emphasis on the ethical, political, aesthetic and cultural ways in which humans communicate about, and represent, the natural world and human relationships to it - a focus that, it would seem, is more pressing than ever.
