Bulgarian History: Medieval Empire vs. Modern Nation State | HTY 2024

The course is focused on the sequence of the periods that conventionally establish the structure of the traditional narrative of Bulgarian History. It will cover both chronologically and topically significant developments related to this context: The Bulgarian Medieval Empires; Ottoman rule; the Modern Age: The occurrence of Bulgarian national awareness during the so called Revival Period and nation building up the most recent period – communist rule in Bulgaria and the transition to post-communism. The course also includes the broader regional and European context for a better understanding of the historical position of Bulgaria within this framework.
