British Literature – Beginnings to 1785

This course introduces students to British literature from its beginnings to 1785 by surveying a wide range of periods, genres, literature movements and traditions, and representative and well-known authors. Texts and authors may include Beowulf, Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, the plays of William Shakespeare, and the works of John Milton, as well as lesser-known authors. Literary periods may include the Anglo-Saxon, medieval, Renaissance, the Restoration, and the eighteenth century.
