American Literature – Beginnings to 1865

This course will cover American literature from its beginnings to 1865. Texts will include short stories, novels, poems, and essays by writers working across 150 years of American history and dealing with the changes in American culture from the colonial era through the end of the Civil War. This course will focus on the ways American writers have invented new forms to describe new worlds and have influenced one another.
