Black History Month began in 1926 as Negro History Week and transformed into Black History Month in 1970. It takes place in February, as this month coincides with the birthdays of two important figures in the abolitionist movement: Abraham Lincoln, the president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and Frederick Douglass, abolitionist, orator, and writer, who escaped from slavery in 1838.
The purpose of this month is an observance and celebration of past and present achievements of African Americans. We’ve compiled a list of print and e-books by black authors below.
