Subject Week: “250th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s greatest writers – Jane Austen (1775–1817)”

Jane Austen was an English writer, famous for her six novels which approach and center ordinary people and their day-to-day lives. Most important and central to her work is the examination of power, class, and gender, specifically as they dictated a woman’s life, livelihood, and independence (or lack thereof). She anonymously published Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Mansfield Park while she was alive, while her other two novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published posthumously.
