How AUBG’s Executive MBA Gets You Out of Your Comfort Zone

In today’s rapidly changing and complex business environment, professionals need strong leadership and soft skills to succeed. This is at the heart of AUBG’s liberal arts education and is further advanced through the university’s high-level Executive Master in Business Administration (EMBA) program.

Simply “winging it” is no longer enough. The global executive education market is projected to more than triple by 2035, reflecting the growing demand for leaders who are equipped to handle modern business challenges.

AUBG EMBA graduates move quickly into leadership roles, report a 47%* average salary increase, and gain adaptive learning skills that help them handle unpredictable business situations with confidence, combining soft skills with real-world business knowledge.

“The EMBA gets you out of your comfort zone, severely, and that’s exactly what makes it so valuable,” explains Momtchil Karpouzanov, Academic Director of Graduate Programs at AUBG.

“Your perceptions, values, and understanding of how business works will be challenged. You won’t just absorb knowledge; you’ll immerse yourself in real-world cases, meet with leading companies, and even travel beyond the classroom through the international business trip.”

What is an EMBA?

An Executive Master in Business Administration (EMBA) is a postgraduate degree designed specifically for experienced professionals, managers, and executives who want to advance their leadership and strategic management skills and progress up the career ladder, without pausing their careers.

Unlike a traditional MBA, which is typically full-time and aimed at early-career professionals, an EMBA targets individuals with 3–10 years or more of professional experience, and is tailored around their busy schedules. The graduate program helps them grow into strategic, forward-thinking leaders.

The EMBA curriculum provides a solid foundation in core business principles, including finance, marketing, strategy, and operations, while placing a strong emphasis on leadership, critical thinking, and real-world application. The program follows a case-based approach, where each participant brings their own professional challenges to the classroom, with expert lectures guiding the learning process, and networking and collaboration at the core.

Education for the modern professional

The AUBG EMBA program is designed to work around the schedules of modern professionals, not the other way around. It allows them to rapidly upskill without putting their career on hold. Spanning 16 months, the program follows a modular format, allowing participants to balance studies with full-time careers.

Lectures are typically held every other weekend at AUBG’s Elieff Center in Sofia, giving participants the chance to meet in person in the capital city and engage directly with professors and peers. The program also features leadership talks, workshops with guest experts, and a variety of elective courses covering hot topics and trends, making graduates even more competitive in the market.

Lyubomir Boyanov (EMBA ’08), Managing Director at Office Market, says: “The environment at the EMBA program motivated us not only to seek business answers, but to also be creative and free-spirited people.”

The program’s highlight is a one-week business international trip to a destination with a similar economic background or size, where participants meet with companies, network, and soak in the local business ethos. Previous cohorts have travelled to Dubai, Prague, Bratislava, Marseille, London, and more.

Focus on developing soft skills

Research from Harvard Business Review shows that soft skills now matter more than ever for career advancement and organizational success, influencing promotional decisions within a company.

According to The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, the most critical soft skills for executives include creativity, resilience, and emotional intelligence. These are qualities many leaders currently lack, which can affect the increase of their wages and career growth.

The AUBG EMBA emphasizes these skills, preparing leaders for the ever-changing business landscape through expert-led training, real-world cases, and peer collaboration. Participants also develop competencies in community, equal opportunity, and belonging, enabling them to lead in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments.

Daniela Dimitrova (EMBA ’13), Vice President IT, CIO NAFTA region at Mercedes-Benz USA, says: Discovering knowledge gaps during my early managerial roles led me to pursue an EMBA, not fully realizing its broader impact at that time.”

Sustainability & corporate social responsibility

Another key aspect of modern leadership is the ability to incorporate social responsibility and sustainability within the company’s structure.

The AUBG EMBA adopts an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability, ethical leadership, and corporate social responsibility. These concepts are integrated into every subject, reflecting the growing expectation for businesses to create positive social and environmental impact.

This commitment is also evident in the joint NOVA Broadcasting Group and EMBA scholarship, now in its third consecutive year, which supports purpose-driven professionals dedicated to responsible leadership.

Globalization and cultural competence through the business trip

A cornerstone of the AUBG EMBA is its international perspective, deepened through the week-long business trip to an abroad destination with a comparable economic history or size. Students visit leading companies, meet with decision-makers, and see how strategy, innovation, and leadership play out in real-world settings.

Through this combination of cultural and business immersion, students develop intercultural competence and a global understanding of business dynamics, which can be applied to their own professional contexts.

Lifelong networking

Partnerships and networking are perhaps the most crucial aspects of one’s professional journey and success. As Momtchil Karpouzanov notes, “A person’s worth is determined by their network”.

The AUBG EMBA program provides students with a range of networking and collaboration opportunities. They learn alongside professionals from various industries and exchange valuable experiences.

“This collaborative approach also opened the door for deep connections that went beyond the walls of the classroom,” says Geri Valova (EMBA ’08), serial entrepreneur.

Students also benefit from industry talks, workshops, and the one-week international business trip, which offers valuable exposure to global executives, entrepreneurs, and policymakers.

But that’s not the end of it all. Upon graduation, students join AUBG’s robust alumni network, gaining lifelong access to professional support, mentorship, and new opportunities.

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, the pressure to stay ahead in the face of technological disruptions, such as AI adoption and regional talent migration, has never been more intense. Delaying further development can leave you at a disadvantage as these changes reshape industries across the globe. If you’re ready to step out of your comfort zone and elevate your career, the AUBG Executive MBA offers the knowledge, network, and confidence to lead in today’s dynamic business world.
