The Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship (CIDC) at the American University in Bulgaria has launched an innovative fellowship program aimed at bringing Bulgaria’s democratic journey to the forefront of international media attention.
The Bulgaria International Journalism Fellowship (BIJF) is seeking two experienced journalists to serve as Senior Fellows, producing high-caliber English-language reporting for global audiences. The one-year positions offer a unique opportunity to create impactful stories while mentoring emerging journalists at AUBG.
“This fellowship represents a significant investment in quality journalism about Bulgaria,” says Dean Starkman, BIJF’s Editorial Director and Non-Resident Distinguished Fellow at the CIDC. “We’re looking for accomplished journalists who can write well and dig deep into important issues and produce compelling stories that resonate with international readers.”
Funded by the America for Bulgaria Foundation, the fellowship emphasises deep and independent reporting where it leads, lively writing, and rigorous fact-checking. Senior Fellows will work closely with Starkman and collaborate with respected international publications while mentoring AUBG student journalists.
Successful candidates will have at least seven years of journalistic experience, demonstrated excellence in English-language reporting, and fluency in Bulgarian. The positions require regular travel to Blagoevgrad and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
Applications, including a portfolio and statement of interest, are being accepted until November 30, 2024. Interested journalists can submit their materials to [email protected].
For informal enquiries, candidates can email [email protected].
