CIDC Christo Grozev fellow Philip Obaji Honored with Germany’s Prestigious Theodor Haecker Prize

CIDC Christo Grozev Fellow, Philip Obaji, has been awarded Germany’s prestigious Theodor Haecker Prize for International Human Rights and Political Courage. The award, established by the City of Esslingen am Neckar in honor of philosopher and anti-Nazi cultural critic Theodor Haecker, recognizes individuals and groups advancing democracy, human rights, and peace. Since 1995, it has grown into one of Germany’s most respected international human rights prizes.

“By awarding the Theodor Haecker Prize to Philip Obaji Jr., the city of Esslingen am Neckar honors his efforts for human rights, democracy, freedom (of the press), peace, and humanity.”

Obaji has gained international attention for his fearless reporting on the activities of the Russian mercenary group Wagner in Africa, particularly in the Central African Republic and Mali. His work has brought to light harrowing accounts of torture, rape, and other grave human rights violations committed by Wagner operatives against vulnerable populations.

Despite threats and the significant personal risks that come with confronting such powerful forces, Obaji has remained steadfast. His journalism not only amplifies the voices of the oppressed but also shines a light on abuses that might otherwise go unnoticed by the global community.

Philip Obaji will formally receive the Theodor Haecker Prize at a ceremony scheduled for April 24, 2026, in Esslingen, Germany. At a time when press freedom and truth-telling are increasingly under attack, Obaji’s work stands as a reminder of the power of journalism to inspire change, demand accountability, and give hope to those who need it most.

Launched at AUBG and named after renowned investigative journalist and AUBG alumnus Christo Grozev, the Christo Grozev Fellowship for Courageous Journalism provides training, tools, and support to journalists working in challenging environments.
