Global Model EU is one of the most prestigious and high-level events where students from all over the world gather for a 3-day simulation of the European Union Council. This year, the event took place from 5-7 January in the Brussels School of Governance, and four students represented AUBG: Ivona Todorova and Nadezhda Miteva, President and Vice President of MEU Blagoevgrad, as well as Antonia Mazurska and Konstantin Boyadzhiev. The experience offered first-hand insight into multilateral negotiations, diplomacy, and policy-making at a European level.
“As members of the club MEU Blagoevgrad, which organizes the largest simulation of European institutions in Southeast Europe, this experience proved especially enriching,” said Ivona Todorova, President of MEU Blagoevgrad. “We established meaningful connections with fellow participants throughout the conference.”
The simulation brought together over one hundred participants from all over the world, half of which were from the United States. Following a one-day visit to Bruges, organized by the GMEU team, the delegation of AUBG students represented Malta and actively engaged in committee sessions, working towards amendments in Malta’s favor.
Discussions focused on key international issues, fostering constructive and dynamic debate throughout the conference. Each participant was assigned a role in one of four different councils, including an European council, a foreign affairs council, defense ministers, and an environmental council. Topics included the Ukraine and Russia aggression, developments in the Middle East, strengthening EU’s defense and cybersecurity cooperation by supporting Ukraine, and ways of reducing greenhouse emissions.
“Drawing on the insights, skills, and best practices gained in Brussels, we are excited to apply what we learned to our own organization and further elevate the quality of our work,” said Ivona Todorova.
Last year, the MEU Blagoevgrad members centered the simulation around navigating Europe’s evolving security landscape, which was a timely topic. The members are already working diligently on preparing another outstanding edition of the simulation, scheduled to take place during the last weekend of March 2026.
