The Department of Politics and European Studies of the American University in Bulgaria invites applications for the international workshop on Russia, NATO, and the West: Disinformation and Contestation in Central and Eastern Europe to be held on the Campus of the American University in Blagoevgrad from 29th September to 1st October 2022. Accommodation and travel expenses will be covered by the workshop. The participants will be invited to stay for the duration of the workshop. If online participation will be made possible on a case-by-case basis, on-ground presence will be strongly preferred. The main outcome of the workshop will be to gather the contributions into a book published in English by an internationally renowned publisher. Scholars from Bulgaria and the Western Balkans are particularly encouraged to apply.

The organizers of the workshop invite contributions from academics and practitioners on any of the five cluster themes listed below:

Cluster theme 1: Realities and perceptions of EU and NATO policies towards Russia in Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on Bulgaria and the Western Balkans.

Cluster theme 2: Assessing societal resilience [and fragilities] in Central and Eastern Europe to the Russian threat (s) with a focus on Bulgaria and the Western Balkans.

Cluster theme 3: Different dimensions of Russian ‘sharp power’ in Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on Bulgaria and the Western Balkans.

Cluster theme 4: Countering disinformation in Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on Bulgaria and the Western Balkans: NATO [and EU responses].

Cluster theme 5: Countering hybrid threats in Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on Bulgaria and the Western Balkans: NATO [and EU responses].
