9th International Festival „Meeting of Student Choirs”

I. Introduction to the international meeting of student choirs
The Ninth International Meeting of Student Choirs is the most important event of 2015 for the Mixed Choir of the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG Choir).

The Meeting is dedicated to 85th anniversary of great contemporary Polish composer Romuald Twardowski.

II. Festival History
Traditionally the Festival is organized in cooperation with Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, Bulgarian Choir Union and Municipality - Blagoevgrad.
The previous 7 editions of the festival had drawn great interest to the choir community in Blagoevgrad and the country – students and professors, local citizens, participants, media and many guests. In the Festival took part terrific choirs from Germany, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the best Bulgarian student choirs. The event attracted many special guests – distinguished composers, choral directors and experts – from Bulgaria, Greece, Germany, Russia, Serbia...

III. The Current Festival
Organized by AUBG with cooperation with Polish Cultural Institute – Sofia, US Embassy – Sofia, and with kind support of our donors.

A special guest of the Festival will be Mr. Romuald Twardowski – Poland.

IV. Festival Purposes:

• To determine the level of student choirs in Bulgaria as opposed to international ones.
• To stimulate the development of student choir art.
• To provoke the creation of new student and high-school choirs in the country and in Europe.
• To give young people the opportunity to share their love for singing, as well as to honor the work of renowned choir composers, music epoch, style or genre.
• To give a chance of young people to meet and associate with each other, to feel themselves as one great intellectual society contributing through their art to creation of one more beautiful world.

V. Participation Rules and Conditions  
Both homogeneous and mixed student or university choirs can participate. At least 2/3 of the people must be students. The juvenile, as well as senior high school choirs (consisting of people aged between 17 and 25) can also join the Festival.

Participants must prepare and perform 20-minute pure music, freely chosen program. It is recommended one American choral piece to be included into it. A Grand piano will be available in the concert hall. Every choir will have 20 minutes time for acoustical rehearsal before performance. The international choirs will have one additional concert in prestigious hall in Sofia.  

The candidates must send a filled application form with repertoire, biographies of choir and conductor, artistic pictures of choir and conductor, and document verifying payment of the entry tax. The application fee is 150 Euro per choir. The entry fee will not be refunded in case the applying choir cancels its participation. The money must be transferred to the following bank account of the American University in Bulgaria:

As “reason for payment”, one should enter: “Participation fee for student choir festival”  

The application deadline is February 28th, 2015.            

Choir participants must cover all their personal expenses during the Festival – transportation, accommodation and food. The Organization Committee is pleased to offer several different rates for accommodation, as follows:

Package 1   accommodation & breakfast      30 Euro/person/day
Package 2   accommodation & half board (breakfast & dinner)   35 Euro/person/day
Package 3   accommodation & full board (breakfast, lunch & dinner)  40 Euro/person/day  

All packages refer to whole duration of the Festival – maximum 4 overnights in double rooms with WC and Bathroom, in nice hotel, among beautiful nature, only 3 km away from the concert hall of the Festival. The place of accommodation gives the opportunity to all participants for rehearsals. Each choir must bring its own electronic piano for that purpose.  

The main goal of the Organizer is to bring together all participants, giving them a chance and time to meet informally in beautiful, quite atmosphere.
Arrangement of accommodation and food for participants is the exclusive right of the Organizing Committee of the Festival. The amounts for accommodation and food, along with specification of final number of the group, must be transferred to the above account no later than March 15, 2015.

VI. Scholarly Conference  
During the festival, a scholarly conference will take place on the following topic: “Contemporary Student and Youth Choral Art – challenges, achievements and trends”. All presented reports will be published in special booklet. One must wire a bank transfer worth 30 Euro in order to participate. The choir directors and other members of the participating choirs can attend the conference without paying the fee.  

VII. Special events  
During the Festival all participants will have the chance to meet distinguished contemporary composers, choral conductors, experts in singing. They will present the newest their works, methods of work, and professional topics of interest.
