Materials Science

PHY 4060

Materials Science studies how the (microscopic) structure and the (macroscopic) properties of materials are related. The structure is determined by the quantum mechanical binding of the (sub)atomic constituents. Utilizing quantum theory and statistical physics one passes from the microstructure of a material to its macroscopic properties (mechanical, thermal, electromagnetic, optical, etc.). Materials Science plays a key role in the development of nanotechnology, quantum technology, cutting edge medical technologies, as well as more traditional fields in machine, civil, electrical and electronic, chemical engineering.
