Advanced Screenwriting

FLM 3010

The goal of this course is to build upon the screenwriting fundamentals established in FLM 221, with the main focus on the structure of feature-length films. Over the course of the semester, students will deepen their understanding of the screenwriting craft with special emphasis on the following elements: principles of feature story structure, building engaging scenes through conflict, crafting compelling characters, and writing effective action and dialogue. Students will strengthen their knowledge of the screenwriting craft through reading and analysis of acclaimed professional screenplays, in-class discussion, review of relevant film clips, writing short scene assignments, and workshopping their script pages in class. The semester will culminate in each student’s completion of the first act of their own original feature film script.
