The American University in Bulgaria, a leading higher education institution in the country, is looking to hire a Writing Center Coordinator who will play a pivotal role in supporting students’ academic success in AUBG by providing expert guidance and assistance in the development of the writing program for students from diverse academic and language backgrounds. The position is based in a vibrant liberal arts university setting and requires a passion for writing, teaching, and fostering a supportive learning environment. As part of the Student Affairs Department, the Writing Center Coordinator will lead a team of writing peer tutors and collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance students’ writing proficiency across various disciplines. This is a full-time position.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Writing Center Coordination
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Writing Center, ensuring its efficient and effective functioning.
- Develops and maintains the Center’s policies, procedures, and operational standards to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Develops and supervises the budget of the Writing Center.
Writing Program Design and Implementation
- Designs and oversees the implementation of a writing program, benefiting the enhancement of the academic writing skills of students. Organizes and facilitates events and activities in support of the program.
- Designs and oversees a writing program in support of the general enhancement of student writing in relation to students’ personal and/or professional development. Organizes and facilitates events and activities in support of this program.
- Offers office hours for individualized writing consultations for students at all levels and from various academic backgrounds.
Peer Tutor Supervision
- Recruits, trains, and supervises a team of peer writing tutors ensuring they are qualified, equipped and motivated to deliver high-quality support to students.
- Conducts regular tutor meetings, workshops, and training sessions to enhance tutors’ skills, knowledge as well as communication and collaboration among tutors.
Collaboration and Outreach
- Works closely with faculty in identifying students’ training, development, and tutoring needs.
- Engages with relevant professional organizations and networks to share knowledge and experiences.
- Attends Writing Center-related meetings and conferences to stay up to date with current trends and best practices in writing center theory and pedagogy.
Participation in Department Activities, Assessment, and Reporting
- Participates in the New Students Orientation Week and other events and initiatives by the Student Affairs Department.
- Joins efforts with the Senior Coordinator of the Advising Center aiming to provide comprehensive assistance to students, especially in terms of academic and writing-related needs.
- Maintains records of student progress and usage of the Writing Center and provides periodic reports to university administration.
REQUIREMENTS AND DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in English Language and/or Literature, Writing, Communication, Rhetoric, Education, or a related field;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with a min. near-to-native level;
- Awareness of various writing styles, citation formats, and writing across the disciplines;
- Excellent computer and media literacy;
- Knowledge of and experience in a liberal arts system of education is highly desirable;
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff;
- Familiarity with academic support resources and learning technologies is desirable.
