Foundations and Institutional Support Manager

The American University in Bulgaria, a leading higher education institution in the country, is looking to hire an energetic, motivated, and enjoying time on the road person for the position of Foundations and Institutional Support Manager. The Foundations and Institutional Support Manager will support the financial sustainability of the organization by building strong partnerships with existing and new foundations and securing new funding opportunities. The role reports and is managed by the VP for Advancement and works in collaboration with all members of the Development office. This is a full-time position, based in Sofia but with frequent travels to the AUBG campus in Blagoevgrad.


  • Complete and own the fundraising strategy for foundations and institutional support, including alignment with other AUBG teams, goal setting in accordance with long-run projections, and carrying out strategy reviews on an annual basis with follow-up adjustment as needed.
  • Carry out prospecting of foundations and institutional support relevant for AUBG’s core needs and long-run projections.
  • Maintain existing relationships with foundations and institutional partners.
  • Build a portfolio of new foundations and institutional partners and execute partner-specific engagement plans.
  • Ensure all reporting to foundations and institutional partners is timely, accurate and positions AUBG in a favorable manner for possible renewals and upgrades.
  • Proactively identify events, associations and other methods to reach new prospects and expand AUBG’s visibility among such prospects.
  • Carry out all communication with foundations and institutional partners, including preparatory communication to be shared by AUBG’s President, VP for Advancement or other Leadership Team representatives as needed.
  • Conduct SWOT analyses at appropriate stages in funded projects, in order to identify areas of improvement and inform potential renewal/upgrades of funding.
  • Participate in Development events as needed.
  • Share information on foundations and institutional support with colleagues in an appropriate, timely and accessible manner.
  • Support VP for Advancement in delivering accurate and timely updates to Board of Trustees and/or the Leadership team on foundations and institutional support developments.


  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in relevant field with specific experience in prospecting, securing, and executing projects funded from foundations and institutional donors.
  • Project management experience.
  • Proven strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experienced collaborator with a learning mindset.
  • Additional training related to business development, fundraising, marketing, and grant writing is an asset.
