Associate Professor or Higher in Journalism, Media, and Communication

The Department of Journalism, Media, and Communication (JMC) seeks an established scholar to teach courses and conduct research in any area of journalism, media, and communication. JMC is an internationally diverse department comprising six full-time faculty members and a cadre of approximately 15 adjunct instructors drawn from the professional and creative industries.

We are seeking a colleague who is interested in the ongoing development of our expanding department and who derive deep satisfaction from mentoring and guiding students inside and outside the classroom. Candidates will primarily be expected to teach our core classes and develop courses in their area of specialty.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Ph.D. in journalism, media, or communication;
  • The rank of associate or full professor at their current university;
  • Research publications commensurate with their rank;
  • Experience teaching college-level courses in English;
  • Teaching experience in a liberal arts environment or willingness to adapt to the American liberal arts style of teaching;
  • A collegial and collaborative attitude.

We especially welcome applications from candidates who hold habilitation in Bulgaria or another European country.

We will consider a spring 2026 start for candidates who have the legal right to work in Bulgaria without needing to apply for a visa. We will consider a fall 2026 start for particularly strong candidates who need to apply for a visa.

The American University in Bulgaria is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and equal opportunity.

To apply, candidates must complete the online application form. Candidates must include a letter of application outlining how they meet the requirements for the position and a complete curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications. Additional materials may be requested at a later date. Only complete applications submitted electronically through the application form will be accepted.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
