If you have a passion for movies, make sure to join the Movie Club at AUBG. Here you will take part in interesting discussions about the art of cinema, and build and practice your movie-making skills. Read our interview with the President of the club, Ariadna Zoidze, and co-president Tina Spassenkova to learn more about what they do.
How would you describe your club in 3 words?
Viewers, critics, makers
What is your club about?
Anything film-related: whether watching, discussing, or making films. We are a pretty new club so we are still very open to any direction our passion for movies might take us to, but the overriding theme of what we do is just that: a passion for movies.
What kind of people are you looking for in your club?
We are looking for open-minded people that are open to watching films from a variety of genres, countries and time periods, and are willing to broaden their horizons beyond their usual viewing habits. We also look for people who are engaged in the club, who are hands-on and want to create something of their own or help organize club events.
While we are thrilled for new members to have practical skills such as editing, photography, etc., we don’t require them, being passionate about films is the only important requirement to joining.
What kind of events do you organize?
The most frequent activity of the club is watching movies and having post-screening discussions. During the almost two years of the Movie Club’s existence, we have also organized a live Academy Awards stream on campus, guest speaker nights, a movie quiz and a 48-hour movie challenge as well as collaborated with other clubs on screenings.
We also support the Literature and Theater (LAT) department in the events they organize, help promote the Film and Theater Studies minor and contribute to the Film Studies major that is in the works right now.
What is the meaning behind your club’s name?
The name, Movie Club, pretty much speaks for itself and stands for a community of movie lovers where we appreciate talking about films as well as about potentially building careers in the film industry.
How has being part of this club enhanced your AUBG experience?
Apart from the educational aspects of our events, there is above all the fun side to it. Screenings (as we did them in the pre-COVID-induced-Zoom-madness-era) in the BAC auditorium are a particularly magical experience, a cozy place to meet our friends and rest from exams and academic responsibilities. It is like going to the cinema, but as members of the club we can have a say about what to see on the big screen that one wouldn’t have at the cinema.
There is also the benefit that the club encourages us to devote our time to watching movies, especially during busier times of the semester and help us stay in touch with new ideas, visuals and experiences every week. This aspect is also aided by our frequent exchange with the film, theater and journalism faculty, as well as by the imput we get from guest speakers.
