AUBG Receives a Grant from GMF to Promote Democratic Participation among Youth in Bulgaria

The Center for Information, Democracy and Citizenship (CIDC) at the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) has received a grant from the German Marshall Fund of the US (GMF) to implement the project, “Platform for Youth Dialogue and Participation.” The CIDC will partner with the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” to implement the project.

The GMF grant, which is under the “Engaging Central Europe” program, emphasizes the critical role young people play as agents of change. The program aims to enhance students’ involvement in democratic processes.

A New Benchmark in Youth Civic Engagement

The Platform for Youth Dialogue and Participation will establish a new standard for youth civic engagement using peer-to-peer interaction and networks, leadership training and mentorship to cultivate future democratic leaders. As part of the project, students of AUBG and Sofia University will be trained and empowered to mentor high school students in Bulgaria to develop and pilot initiatives, tools and products that will enhance democratic participation and civic engagement among their peers and networks.

This collaborative effort, backed by the US Agency for International Development as part of the Central Europe—Building Resilience in Civil Society (CEBRICS) program, is part of initiatives aimed at safeguarding democratic principles and freedoms in the region.

Supporting AUBG’s Mission

Through innovative approaches, the Platform for Youth Dialogue and Participation   will combat civic disengagement among youth and promote active citizenship. The initiative advances AUBG’s mission to prepare young people for democratic and ethical leadership and the CIDC’s commitment to promoting informed democratic citizenship.

“We are immensely grateful to the German Marshall Fund of the United States for their support of the Platform for Youth Dialogue and Participation,” said President Ensign. “This initiative is a shining example of how education, peer interaction, and practical experiences can develop informed, engaged citizens ready to lead. Our partnership in this project underscores a mutual commitment to empowering the youth, ensuring they play a pivotal role in shaping their democratic societies. Together, we’re making significant strides in creating a more engaged and informed generation of leaders.”

Contributing to a Stronger Democracy

This ambitious initiative aims to cultivate a generation of young leaders prepared to contribute to a stronger democracy. It leverages the combined efforts of AUBG’s CIDC, Sofia University, and international support from USAID and GMF. The Platform for Youth Dialogue and Participation has the potential to significantly influence civic engagement among young people in Bulgaria and beyond.
