AUBG Celebrates Its Relationship with Blagoevgrad at Annual Reception

April 11, 2018

The America for Bulgaria Student Center gathered on March 27 members of the Blagoevgrad political, business and cultural elite to celebrate the university’s close ties to its host town. President Dr. Steven Sullivan, along with members of the faculty, administration and student body, welcomed the special guests and thanked them for creating a wonderful home away from home for the AUBG community.

“All of us at AUBG consider Blagoevgrad to be our home and we want to be on friendly terms with all our neighbors,” Sullivan said.

Blagoevgrad mayor Atanas Kambitov also stressed on the importance of the great relationship between the municipality and the university. He vowed that the two institutions will continue to work together on solving issues as they have done in the past. Kambitov, however, did not agree with Sullivan on one thing.

“You are not our neighbors, but a part of Blagoevgrad and the whole town feels that way,” the mayor said.

He also announced the town’s plans to include an additional 30 acres of land to the newly built Macedonia Park thus creating a “green heart” for Blagoevgrad right next to AUBG’s Skaptopara campus. The new park would feature playgrounds, sports facilities and recreational areas.

Following the opening remarks, guests got the chance to enjoy international food from some of the regions the AUBG community represents, and learn more about the academic excellence and success from students and professors.
