Class 2008 Received Their Tickets to the Future
This year 248 students from 18 different countries received their diplomas at the official ceremony, which took place on May 18, 2008 in Blagoevgrad. Valedictorians of the class became Anna Tomova, Bulgaria, and Izabela Vlahu, Macedonia, who graduated with GPA 3.98.
At the ceremony 21 students from the fifth class of the Executive Masters program in Business Administration at AUBG also received their diplomas.
Honorary degree “Doctor Honoris Causa” was awarded to His Excellency John Beyrle, the US ambassador to Bulgaria, who was also a keynote speaker at the fourteenth commencement ceremony. In his address to the guests Beyrle said: “We must work together to build societies based on tolerance and democratic values, societies where people do not fear those who are different from them, societies where people of different nationalities and religions live and work peacefully together. This is not dream. The American University in Bulgaria is a vivid proof that we can build such societies.” He considers the most valuable lesson that a University teaches its students is not to be: “…afraid to ask hard questions, not afraid to challenge the common wisdom, not afraid to speak your mind. That’s what makes you, and your University, different from others. This is a laboratory for inventing new ideas and new ways of thinking.”
Greetings to the graduating students sent Mr. Flanagan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AUBG, the AUBG President Dr. Huwiler and the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria Vania Dobreva on behalf of Mr. Daniel Valchev - Minister of Education and Science. On behalf of the students Andreaa Ceplinschi (BA) and Manol Peykov (EMBA) gave salutatory speeches.
Manol Peykov, Class of 1995, belongs to the legendary first AUBG Class that produced a number of successful leaders and entrepreneurs now working all over the world. On Sunday he received his Masters Diploma. In his moving speech he talked about his relationship with AUBG which "has been a veritable love affair." For “love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove… …If this be error, and upon me proved I never spoke, nor no man ever loved.”

AUBG Prof. Diego Lucci Publishes a Book
The book “Scripture and Deism” written by the AUBG History and Philosophy professor Diego Lucci has recently been published by the Peter Lang Publishing Group. It deals with the British deists' biblical hermeneutics, its roots, and its effects on European culture and society. Deist thinkers such as John Toland, Anthony Collins and Matthew Tindal pointed out the historical and anthropological origins of positive religions. Focusing on the human roots of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Ancient Paganism, they advocated tolerance and freedom of thought.
In the context of the deists' research on the history of positive religions, the study of the Scriptures played a key role. Deists and freethinkers fought against the influence of Christian doctrine on political and social life. They denied the supernatural foundations of Christianity and of Christian institutions, and analyzed the Bible with the aim to promote the free search for truth. This book thus stresses the significance of the deists' biblical criticism for the development of Enlightenment views of religion and for the secularization of Europe.
Prof. Diego Lucci is the author of a number of writings on early modern philosophy and European intellectual history.

The American University in Bulgaria Celebrates its Diversity
To overcome differences, to understand the beliefs of others, and to be tolerant towards the different people around you, is the message of International Week, which is held at the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) from 11 until 16 February 2008. Young people from Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Moldova, the U.S.A. and many other countries, will look at our differences. Life in AUBG has taught students to be understanding of the fact that all young people around the world are actually quite alike in their desires, goals, and dreams. According to them, the truth of living well together is built upon “finding similarities and tolerance towards the differences.”
AUBG is the only place in Bulgaria where students from 30 countries share not only the classroom, but also the place they live in, daily activities, way of life, and entertainment.
It’s the eighth year that the International week will be carried out at AUBG and during the week the university community will have a chance to learn more about the cultural differences of the countries present in the University. This year the event is organized by the Diversity Team and the Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society.

The Father of the Pill Visits AUBG
The world-famous scientist of Bulgarian origin Carl Djerassi, chemistry professor and developer of the first means of oral contraception visited the American University in Bulgaria on November 8, 2007. He arrived in Bulgaria following an invitation by AUBG President Dr. David Huwiler. The Red room turned out to be too small to host all the students, faculty and administration members who wanted to attend Prof. Djerassi's lecture “Sex and Reproduction – Ready for Divorce?”
The London Times has declared the famous scientist as one of the 30 greatest people of the past millennium, alongside geniuses such as Shakespeare, Newton, Darwin, Einstein and Copernicus. He is the only one among those 30 who has walked into the third millennium. In the USA he is popularly known as “the Father of the Pill”. The pill triggers the beginning of the modern sexual revolution and of family planning. It is the first drug elected to the USA Inventors Hall of Fame. Professor Djerassi is also one of the few scientists in USA who have won both the National Medal in Science and the National Medal in Technology.
Professor Djerassi is an honorary member of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, as well as of 15 other academies and universities, some of which are: the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Mexican and Brazilian Academies of Sciences. He is an honorary member of the Royal Society of Chemistry in London and the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He has been awarded 16 honorary degrees.
The British Medical Journal has nominated Carl Djerassi’s invention for the title of greatest medical breakthrough since 1840. The vote was initiated this month, and the results will be announced on January 18, 2008, in London.
Moreover, Professor Carl Djerassi is a well-known playwright. He writes plays in a new genre, “science-in-fiction”, invented by himself. His creative work enjoys great success. He is also a passionate collector of paintings. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art holds a section named after him that exhibits paintings from Djerassi’s personal collection. Professor Djerassi owns many of Sir Henry Moore’s sculptures.

AUBG Student Presents Bulgaria in the UN
The first Bulgarian youth delegation to the United Nations was initiated by an AUBG student. Boryana Atanasova, majoring European Studies and Business Administration at AUBG, presented Bulgaria in the UN. For the first time the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has included youth representatives in the Bulgarian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. Boryana took participation at the sessions of the General Assembly’s Third Committee on Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian questions from 8 to 13 October, during which global youth problems were discussed.
The inclusion of youth representatives is a priority for the UN since 1981, and until now there have been seven youth resolutions in which the member states are summoned to send young delegates, so that this social group could be more active in the process of decision-making. During the ongoing 62nd session of the General Assembly, from 192 member states, 19, among which Bulgaria, have followed the resolution. Through the participation of young delegates, Bulgaria is included in the list of the most progressive countries that not only put the youth among their national priorities but also actively include the youth in the process of preparation and execution of international and national plans of action for the resolution of that social group’s problems.

AUBG Students Win First Prize
The AUBG students Dimitar Ouzounov (junior) and Ivan Sartonev (senior), majoring in Computer Science, under the guidance of Prof. Volin Karagiozov won 1st prize with their project “Library Link Resolver” on the sixth edition of the highly competitive ICT Exhibition “Bulgarian Education and Research Institutions at the Centre of Innovative ICT Projects” at Plovdiv International Fair, supported by UNDP, September 24 – 29, 2007. The Exposition includes works of students, professors and researchers in the area of information and communication technology.
Library link-resolver project is very practically oriented, and aims at solving one of the most important (and costly) problems of modern information delivery and retrieval systems. The link-resolver will provide easy and user-friendly access from Abstract and Index databases to the journal, and further on to the full-text version of the particular citation in the library collections. Reference linking, or the ability to get from a citation to its full-text counterpart, has transformed the process of modern information retrieval by taking full advantage of new technology to provide immediate electronic access to the e-content, e-journals, and ultimately to the full-text.

The American University in Bulgaria keeps growing
The number of students who have chosen AUBG for the start of their professional and personal development exceeded 1,100. 12 new professors joined the faculty. The university campus expands as well so that the students can have the best possible conditions for studying and recreation.
All this calls for a celebration which will draw together students, professors, and administrators, to celebrate the beginning of a year of high expectations. The picnic, which has become traditional for AUBG, will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the baseball field in Bachinovo. During it, the AUBG President will welcome all and cut the cake which every year symbolizes the beginning of the academic year.
This year the AUBG Library staff have a double reason to celebrate. On the one hand, this will be the library’s fifteenth anniversary; on the other, ground will be broken for the construction of a new library building, which will join the two residence halls and the academic building which was opened in Skaptopara in May 2007 . Step by step, the university proceeds with the implementation of its plan to construct a modern and well-equipped university campus.
The new library building will consist of a reading hall, an information and check-out desk, two group session rooms, and an information technology office which will serve the needs of the library. The library has an extended built-up area of 2,100 sq.m. The construction of the project is assigned to Consortium of AUBG-2006, which consists of three leading local construction companies: “Monolithstroy - Chorbadjiiski Baikushev”, RASTER IUG, and STILKOMPLEKS; the architectural design was executed by Arch. Dimcho Tilev, who also designed AUBG’s new academic building.
AUBG’s library has been the initiator and founder of the first Bulgarian Information Consortium - BIC, which provides the academic community in Bulgaria with access to databases with a huge number of foreign-language magazines (EBSCO, Emerald, the MUSE project and many other information publications). It is a bridge between different cultures and practices. The library has established working relations with leading document centers worldwide, such as the U.S. Library of Congress, the British Library Document Supply Centre, the German Academic Libraries Consortium, and is also a member and co-founder of the American International Consortium of Academic Libraries.

Nita Gojani, Stanko Stankov, Katya Georgieva, Filjor Broka, all from Class 2007, Hristina Jordanova, Class 2003, and current student Nemanja Grujicic, were in the center of the discussion. Sitting next to President Bush were Bulgarian students Stanko Stankov and Katya Georgieva.
The meeting began in the presence of the media – journalists from all leading electronic and print media had gathered in the Center’s auditorium to cover one of the liveliest and most optimistic episodes of President Bush’s stay in the country.
President Bush asked the students about their dreams and the way they see themselves 20 years from now. One by one, the students shared their education and career plans. All of them expressed their intention to continue their education in USA or Europe and come back to work for their societies, and the President encouraged them to do so.
This year’s valedictorian Filjor Broka from Albania shared his hope to help develop higher education in his country. He said he would be happy if one day students in Albania enjoyed a liberal arts institution similar to AUBG in their own country. The Presidential Medalist for 2007, Nita Gojani from Kosovo, talked about the connection between the University and her work in Kosovo for improving the interaction between Serbs and Kosovars. Nemanja Grijucic told about his plans to work for the development of the democratic institutions in his home country – Serbia. Stanko Stankov from Bulgaria mentioned his affinity for American football and his willingness to popularize the sport here.
Other topics of discussion included the value of the education they receive in Bulgaria and the business climate in the Balkans. All AUBG students spoke of the importance of the education they received at the University and the broad horizons it gave them.
An interesting moment at the beginning of the meeting was when Stanko Stankov mentioned he was having a job interview on the next day. Then President Bush turned to one of the cameras and appealed to Stanko’s potential employer saying that the young man should receive the job.
The meeting between President Bush and the students lasted almost an hour and a half, instead of the initially announced 30 minutes. When the meeting was over, students received presents from the White House and had individual photos taken with the President. The students also took away the President’s signature on their nametags. News of the event and interviews with several of the students were later broadcasted in prime time.
AUBG’s Elieff Center was the President’s last stop on Bush’s concise and busy visit in Bulgaria and the end of his eight-day tour in Europe.

Embracing Nature
PTPI at AUBG launches its first environmental project
Breathing is such a natural process that we hardly even notice it. Especially at the end of the semester, before the final exams. The good thing about breathing and nature is that they don’t have breaks even when the AUBG academic calendar gets tense.
The first environmental project of the PTPI’s AUBG Chapter turned to our basic need to Breathe and used this slogan to draw the attention of the AUBG community to issues of immediate importance.
The “green” project started earlier this semester when Political Science Professor Maria Tzankova shared her idea to organize a tree planting campaign with the club’s president senior student Rauf Zeynalov. She proposed to introduce the popular carbon emissions offsetting model among the AUBG students, faculty and staff who travel by airplanes and contribute to atmosphere pollution and global warming. The idea was well accepted by several environmentally aware students, professors and staff members that helped her develop and popularize the initiative.
After brainstorming in Prof. Tzankova’s office and meeting with Blagoevgrad deputy mayor Georgi Milev and the ecological department in the municipality, the parameters of the project were defined and the tree planting campaign was scheduled for October (since trees are planted in early spring or late autumn).
However, the campaign did have its successful start with the “Green Hug” event that tried to take people away from their studies or work for a couple of hours. Despite the tempting idleness of a hectic week’s Saturday, on 21 April a group of about 15 AUBG students and professors took the road to the nearby park Bachinovo to walk, hug trees, and feel the throbbing nature or just take a rest from everything else.
The next event within the project – the paper waste collection campaign, will take place during this semester’s finals week in the AUBG’s Main Building and residence halls. A month ahead of Blagoevgrad municipality’s separate waste collection initiative, the University students, faculty and staff will have a chance to separate their paper waste and have it all recycled. Special notes will designate the waste paper bins.
The project will continue through the Fall 2007 semester. A website will be developed on which all will be able to calculate the volume of gas emissions they produce and the number of trees they will have to buy and plant in order to reduce their carbon footprint.
AUBG-ers will be able to take responsibility for the effects they have on the environment by paying 5-8 leva for a tree.

AUBG is the Leader in Business Education in Bulgaria
The American University in Bulgaria offers the best Bachelor's Business program in the country, indicates a survey in the “Business Week” magazine
“The American University in Bulgaria guarantees best career prospects and attractive salary,” reads the introduction of a survey on the top 15 Bachelor’s Business programs in Bulgaria made by the “Business Week Bulgaria” magazine. The survey published in the magazine’s April issue rates AUBG the best among all institutions of higher education that offer business education.
186 company directors – members of the Bulgarian Business Leaders’ Forum (BBLF), 143 HR managers, including the managers of the 100 largest companies-members of the Bulgarian Human Resource Management and Development Association, and 162 members of the Bulgarian Marketing Association, including marketing managers, completed the survey.
The questionnaire concerned the business departments of the fifteen business schools of higher education that have had at least three graduating classes, so that one could rely on the interviewees having observations on the graduates, explain the authors of the survey.
The research is based on three criteria – (1) rating of the performance of the employees coming from the respective school, based on qualification for the job, adaptability and demonstrated potential; (2) combined rating of the employees’ performance, and the employer’s willingness to recruit new graduates from the same school; and (3) physical and technological resources, including classrooms, computers for students, libraries and e-libraries.
AUBG ranks first by all three criteria, having the best cumulative rating as well. It is followed by Sofia University and the University of World and National Economy in Sofia.
The same issue of the magazine runs an article presenting the career paths and achievements of five successful young Bulgarian professionals, “yuppies”, who are now working in the country. Two of them are AUBG graduates – Stefan Ivanov, who is Executive Director of Citigroup for Bulgaria, and Alexandra Bizerova, owner of Studio Help, a company specializing in the creation of software documentation.

President Easton Retires Ten Months Earlier
President W. Michael Easton announced his plans to retire from his post in the summer of 2007, ten months earlier than planned, because of family health issues. The news came from the regular January meeting of the Board of Trustees of the American University in Bulgaria, held in Washington. With deep appreciation for his outstanding service to the University, the trustees granted President Easton’s request.
After announcing his plans, President Easton said that he is proud of what has been accomplished at AUBG since he was elected president in May 2005. “It has been a genuine team effort. I am fortunate to have a splendid group of faculty and administrators on campus, a fine student body and an extremely supportive Board. I had hoped to spend one more year at AUBG but continuing family health issues require me to return to the United States and be with my family. I believe I have achieved what I set out to do. The University is in strong shape as it embarks on its next, exciting phase of growth and the continued achievement of academic excellence,” he said.
AUBG Board Chair David T. Flanagan said, “Leadership makes all the difference. Mike Easton and his team have done an extraordinary job for us and have exceeded all of our expectations. While we all shall miss Mike, we fully understand his reasons for returning to the U.S., and we wish him and his family well. Mike will leave AUBG in remarkably strong shape, the best it has ever been in its history. Our finances are sound, our student body is gifted and our faculty and resources are excellent. We are entering a new phase in our growth with the construction of new campus facilities in Skaptopara. We are grateful to Mike for his effective leadership in making these developments possible.
“The transition to new leadership should be seamless. Both Provost Ann Ferren and Vice President Alex Alexandrov remain committed to AUBG and will bring their wisdom and experience to assure smooth operations at the University and a successful transition as we elect a new president,” Flanagan added.
The AUBG Board has formed a Presidential Search Committee and will retain a professional executive search firm specializing in senior academic positions to assist it. The Search Committee will actively seek out the best-qualified candidates from the U.S. and Europe. President Easton said the Committee will present a recommendation for a new president by the end of this academic year.

Students Learn, Discuss, and Play in an Anti-Racism Effort
Monday, November 13, welcomed AUBG community with a number of witty posters that drew attention to People to People International (PTPI) “Against Racism and Nationalism” campaign held between 11 and 18 November 2006 at the University. The students’ initiative was well planned, carefully executed and interesting enough to attract supporters from the very beginning.

PTPI organized the event along with the international NGOs UNITED and FARE - Football against Racism in Europe, and AUBG’s sports club the Griffins. According to Rauf Zeynalov, President of PTPY and a third-year AUBG student from Azerbaijan, the University’s multicultural environment favors the realization of projects that foster respect to cultural diversity. “Although AUBG community is a culturally diverse one, racial problems do exist out there. As students travel a lot around the world they may encounter such problems and they need to be prepared to deal with them,” Rauf says. “That’s why, I think now is the time and AUBG is the place to increase students’ awareness on issues on racism and nationalism,” he explains. Lectures, movies, round table discussions, and a football game were the events that framed PTPI’s one-week anti-racism campaign at AUBG: Saturday, 11 November. People to People International student club at AUBG officially opened the ambitious campaign with two workshop sessions. The workshops “Students against Racism” were organized by professional trainers with the participation of the students. The workshop started with ice-breaking games, then the students talked about their experience related to Racism. Monday, 13 November. Krassimir Kanev, Deputy Chair of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, delivered a lecture on ethnic minority rights and racist extremism in Bulgaria. Kanev talked about the escalating ethnic tensions in Bulgaria and specifically about the appearance of the ultra-nationalist party “Ataka” in the political life of the country.
Tuesday, 14 November. History professor Diego Lucci lectured on the origins of racism in Europe. According to Lucci, although we are biologically different, it is culture and education that influence our behavior, not biology.
Wednesday, 15. November. “Racism, cultural conflicts and the media” was the topic of the lecture delivered by Journalism and Mass Communications Professor Aernout Van Lynden. There he spoke of racism and cultural tensions as a phenomenon that is a part of our natural human desire to belong to a certain group.
Thursday and Friday, 16 and 17 November. Students and faculty participated in the two round table discussions on Nationalism and Diversity and Racism with the participation of. After the discussions the movies “Crash”, “Remember the Titans” and “No Man’s Land” were shown.
Saturday, 18 November. The weekend started with a long awaited football game “Griffins against Racism”. Although the game opposed freshmen and older students and finished with a victory for the “Elders” over the “Rookies”, the final loser was, of course, Racism.
At the PTPI’s closing reception in the evening Rauf Zeynalov and Provost Ann Ferren spoke on the positive effect of the campaign. After that Ferren and Dean of Students Lydia Krise handed the certificates to the students who participated in the workshops and to the winners of the essay competition that took place during the campaign.
The rest happened at the party room in Skaptopara I late at night. The music was loud, different in style and origin, but obviously working for everyone. Probably because “fundamentally, we are all the same”.

“The Best Bulgarian Universities,” a ranking of Universities, is prepared for second time in Bulgaria and it was published by the national newspaper “24 hours.”
The overall grade shows that according to the classification the top three Universities in the country are the American University in Bulgaria, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the University of National and World Economy. It was commented that some of the AUBG rates are due to the fact that AUBG attracts a large number of international students and that many of the graduates are employed outside of the country. These three Universities have distinctively higher ranking than the rest and the difference between their grades is minimal. The conclusion of the ranking was that these three Universities can be considered the leading ones in the country from the viewpoint of businesses.
